Donkey Kong Country, connu au Japon sous le nom de Super Donkey Kong, est un jeu de plateforme développé par Rare et édité par Nintendo, entre autres, sorti le 18 novembre 1994 sur Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Le titre met en scène le gorille Donkey Kong et son neveu Diddy Kong, partis récupérer leur réserve de bananes volée par le crocodile King K. Rool et son armée de Kremlings, à travers quarante niveaux en défilement latéral où le joueur saute entre les plateformes, évite les obstacles, collecte des objets, monte des animaux et des wagons de mine, et affronte ennemis et boss. Le jeu propose également des modes multijoueurs coopératifs ou en course, et se distingue par des graphismes pré-rendus en 3D inédits pour l'époque. Disponible par la suite sur Wii, Wii U et New Nintendo 3DS, il affiche une note agrégée de 82,69 et une durée de quatre heures pour l'histoire principale, étendue à six heures pour un parcours complet. La presse a salué l'intensité de l'action propre au plateformer 2D selon Game Informer, tandis que Deeko a regretté une baisse de qualité graphique et une bande-son insuffisante sur certaines versions, et des joueurs sur Metacritic ont cité la difficulté et le plaisir du jeu tout en affirmant leur attachement au titre.

« Donkey Kong Country is my favourite retro game. It is immensely difficult, but very fun. It fleshed out Donkey Kong's franchise power and gave him his iconic demeanor. This game has so much character: amazing pixel art, music and enemy design. I haven't played the other 2 Country games because their difficulty, but DKC 1 is really making me itch for them. »

« Donkey Kong Country marks the beginning of one of the best 2D platformer series of all time. The game features a variety of unique, fun and at times challenging levels, a phenomenal soundtrack and impressive visuals/animations that still hold up today. The only real downside of the game are the bonuses, as most of the time they are hidden behind walls or simply impossible to find as a blind player. But still, DKC is a fantastic 2D platformer and definitely worth playing. 8,7/10 »
