Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag, développé par Ubisoft Montréal et édité par Ubisoft Entertainment, est un jeu d’action-aventure et d’infiltration sorti le 29 octobre 2013 sur PlayStation 3 et Xbox 360, avant de paraître sur d’autres plateformes dont le PC, la PlayStation 4, la Nintendo Switch et Google Stadia. L’intrigue débute en 1715, alors que les pirates ont établi une république hors-la-loi dans les Caraïbes et perturbent les puissances européennes, et suit Edward Kenway, un jeune capitaine dont l’habileté et le mépris de l’autorité lui valent le respect de figures comme Barbe-Noire tout en le plongeant dans un conflit ancien menaçant l’édifice pirate. Le joueur incarne ce capitaine formé par les Assassins, alternant lame secrète, pistolets et sabres, et commande le navire Jackdaw pour piller et améliorer son équipement dans un monde ouvert allant de Kingston à Nassau, avec un mode multijoueur proposant de nouveaux personnages. L’Édition Gold comprend le jeu de base, le DLC Le Prix de la Liberté, le Pack Pirates illustres, des packs cosmétiques et des packs pour personnages multijoueur. La presse a salué certains aspects, The Escapist comparant son gameplay à Sid Meier’s Pirates! en 3D et Cheat Code Central louant le travail de raffinement des développeurs, tandis que des joueurs sur Metacritic et Steam y voient l’un des meilleurs opus de la série et apprécient notamment les combats maritimes et le DLC avec Adewale. Le titre affiche un score Metacritic de 84 et un score OpenCritic de 85.

« In my opinion, I would say that Assassin's Creed Black Flag is one of the best games in the series, and I say this for the following reasons. First, I would say that it is one of the games where, for the first time, the game itself has upgrades to something external to the main character (not counting bases or irrelevant upgrades), which in this case is the pirate ship, or as it is known, the Jackdaw. In addition to all this, its setting in Cuba being conquered by the Spanish and British gives it an even better touch, since in the chase scenes the way the setting and scenery are used is simply sublime. »
