À la différence de la plupart des autres titres de la série Armored Core orientés vers l'action, cet opus adopte le format d'un jeu de stratégie. Le joueur ne contrôle pas directement le mech pendant l'action, mais il peut le personnaliser comme à l'accoutumée en y implémentant une intelligence artificielle qui combat de manière autonome. La fonction du joueur se limite ainsi à configurer la machine et à entraîner son IA sur des arènes d'entraînement. L'édition internationale « Extreme Battle » inclut en outre des scénarios de combat additionnels.
Sur le plan de l'accueil critique, le site BonusStage a pointé du doigt des problèmes de jouabilité et d'accessibilité, tout en reconnaissant que le titre réussit de façon remarquable de nombreux éléments. Pour sa part, 1UP a salué la profondeur et la complexité importantes de la proposition pour un jeu portable, notant qu'il s'avère par certains aspects plus indulgent que ses homologues sur console.
