Ce titre, disponible sur PC, Mac et Linux, conjugue stratégie au tour par tour et tactiques en temps réel au sein de genres mêlant stratégie, TBS et RTS. L'intrigue situe l'émergence d'une nouvelle puissance dans les steppes de l'Est, avec un roi guerrier à la tête d'un million de cavaliers se dirigeant vers Rome, tandis que les joueurs peuvent tenter de survivre en fondant un royaume barbare ou oriental ou en défendant les restes de l'Empire romain. Le jeu propose des systèmes de destruction apocalyptique permettant d'utiliser le feu en combat pour incendier des bâtiments ou dévaster des régions, une position de départ légendaire pour l'Empire romain oriental affaibli par ses divisions internes, ainsi que des systèmes de jeu révisés touchant à la politique, à l'arbre généalogique, à la gestion civique et à la progression technologique. Les détails d'époque et le réalisme visuel ont été soignés pour restituer cette fin d'ère. La presse a salué les flammes dynamiques en combat comme une amélioration majeure, tout en notant la puissance matérielle requise, et GamesVillage.it a jugé que ce chapitre porte la franchise à un nouveau niveau en offrant un départ frais, tandis que certains joueurs expriment leur déception quant au plaisir des batailles ou recommandent l'usage de mods. L'opus affiche un score Metacritic de 80 et un prix de 44,99 euros.

« Релиз игры был не самым удачным. Были баги и плохая оптимизация но у нас нынче по другому не принято. Тем не менее это самая удивительная игра серии подарившая море положительных эмоций. Музыка, мрачное оформление и битвы это те вещи которые до сих пор не позволяют забыть об этой игре. Боже у меня до сих пор мурашки по коже идут от музыки в меню. В игре перед игроком чаще всего стоит цель "хотя бы выжить" и так и должно быть ведь этот период истории действительно был очень мрачным: холодные зимы; не урожай, а отсюда голод так еще и гунны из за которых началось великое переселение германских и славянских народов »
