Description (IGDB)

Retro-inspired tower defense and action platformer SolSeraph reinvents the classics! As the guardian of humanity, civilization is in your hands. Build your cities and set up defensive structures to protect them from the constant threat of monsters, then descend into their lairs with sword and spells to eliminate them for good. Explore floating islands, ancient caverns, and lost cities. The world is yours! Brought to you by ACE Team, the creative minds behind Rock of Ages and Zeno Clash, SolSeraph combines action and strategy for a rich and unique gameplay experience reminiscent of the 16-bit era.

Histoire (IGDB)

In the beginning, there was only Chaos... ...as far as the eye could see; until one day, Sky Father and Earth Mother drove the Chaos away and made the world. They made the stars and the sun and the waters and the land. And then they made plants and animals, and finally, their favorite creation: humankind. When they were done, Sky Father and Earth Mother left the world, so it could grow freely on its own. But the Younger Gods were arrogant and cruel. They resented humans because humans had been granted the gift of storytelling; the gift of memory. So they tormented humankind with fires, storms, and floods, until all the tribes were scattered across the land, struggling for survival. But Helios, Knight of Dawn, the child of god and man, came to humanity's aid...

SolSeraph descends from the heavens but may not have stuck the landing

It got a little lost in last week’s flurry of activity, but SolSeraph — ACE Team’s tribute to genre-blending SNES gem ActRaiser — is out, though sadly not heralded by a celestial chorus. Staying close to its inspirations, it’s half hack n’ slash platformer, half real-time strategy about a god reclaiming their land from monsters and demons in the name of their human followers. I’ve not had a chance to play it for myself, but trusted ActRaiser fans and platformer aficionados alike haven’t had much good to say. Perhaps it just wasn’t weird enough for ACE Team? Below, a launch trailer. (more…)

SolSeraph review - God on a bit of a budget

In action, how like an angel, in apprehension how like a god. This is handy. In SolSeraph, you play a sort of blend of an angel and a god, as far as I can tell. You have wings and armour and a sword, but you can also inspire people, make the land fertile and cast lightning at your enemies. You're pretty swish, in other words, but then you land and a spider will dangle from above and hurt you, and then you'll step in some brambles. Ouch.SolSeraph is a spiritual successor to ActRaiser, and ActRaiser was really, really interesting. You were a god in ActRaiser and you lead your people. Sometimes you wandered around side-scrolling bits sticking it to baddies. Sometimes you flew over a map encouraging your people to build towns and roads and to seal evil-doers away for good. It was such a harmonious blend: beat-'em-up and god game. A bit of a classic. And SolSeraph stays pretty close to the original design. So once again you divide your time between wandering around 2D platforming levels and fighting monsters, and then taking to the skies and leading your own people as they get their civilisations back in order, building a town, fighting off waves of enemies and then smashing up a local baddie god for good measure. Let's look at this second part of the game first, because I had a fair amount of fun with it, and that's because SolSeraph has taken ActRaiser's god game stuff and turned it into a tower defence number.Read more

Avis des critiques et joueurs

Critiques de la Presse (Metacritic)

COGconnected 70/100

« SolSeraph’s definitely a successful copycat that lacks originality. If you haven’t heard of or played ActRaiser, SolSeraph will seem quite unique. It’s an example of the finished product being greater than the sum of its parts: a good action platformer combined with a good RTS that makes for a very good package. If you were hoping for another ActRaiser game someday, this may be the best you’ll ever get. But if you hold ActRaiser dear to your heart, you may get offended at how much SolSeraph essentially remakes that wonderful game. »

Vandal 70/100

« SolSeraph is a good way to bring ActRaiser back. It does have some shortcomings, but if you’re willing to embrace nostalgia, there’s a lot of fun to be had with this game. »

Destructoid 65/100

« I appreciate Ace Team's attempt here, I really do. It's kind of amazing that this game exists in 2019 under Sega. It's not as original as the team's past projects, but SolSeraph has a lot to like if you're looking for a modern take on an absolute gem of the 16-bit era. Part of me wonders how outlandish these creators could've gotten with a bigger budget and scope, but as a tribute, this still hits the spot. Even if SolSeraph fails to raise the bar, I'm so happy someone took another crack at ActRaiser. »

IGN 65/100

« SolSeraph is an authentic ode to ActRaiser undercut by unbalanced action levels and shallow strategy gameplay. »

PlayStation Universe 60/100

« SolSeraph is a good game that tries to do too much. Unfortunately, everything it does is the bare minimum and never really pushes itself to be great. All in all, SolSeraph is a safe and enjoyable title. »

Digitally Downloaded 60/100

« We’ve seen better from ACE Team. Abyss Odyssey was a gorgeous representation of the developer’s own culture (something we still see too infrequently in video games), while Rock of Ages was as funny as a Monty Python sketch, and Deadly Tower Of Monsters was the spot-on love letter to the dodgy B-cinema that so many of us loved growing up. In that company SolSeraph seems a little too unfocused and uncertain of itself, despite being an entertaining and challenging game in its own right. However ACE Team at its worst is still more distinctive than most other developers at their best. I do think that SolSeraph will find an audience, and I do hope, for those who have played ActRaiser, that this comes across as the spiritual successor they've long been waiting for. »

CGMagazine 60/100

« While it’s very easy to see the elements that inspired SolSeraph, the game fails to capture why any of these memorable mechanics are worth revisiting or reinventing. »

GameSpot 60/100

« SolSeraph could have hemmed slightly closer to the conventions of its clear inspiration, and it may have been better for it. The changes to the sim aspect create gameplay depth at the expense of tonal depth, and the action segments can be annoyingly clunky, especially with the unnecessary addition of enemies that are untouchable until an unclear point in time. The willingness to riff on one of the most beloved classics of an entire console era shows a remarkable amount of audacity, and it actually halfway works. It's the half that doesn't that makes SolSeraph such a qualified recommendation. »

Avis des Joueurs (Metacritic)

rpardono 8/10

« Pra quem gosta de Actraiser do SNes e jogos 2D, SolSeraph é uma boa opção e diverte. Não chega a ser um Actraiser, mas vale a pena conferir! »
