Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, développé par Capcom Development Division 1 et édité par Capcom, est sorti le 24 janvier 2017. Ce volet majeur de la série marque un passage radical à la vue à la première personne et une mise à jour complète des systèmes de gameplay, propulsant l’expérience survival horror vers une nouvelle ère grâce au moteur RE Engine, qui offre un style photoréaliste et une immersion accrue. L’action se déroule dans l’Amérique rurale de mi-2017, peu après les événements de Resident Evil 6, et suit Ethan Winters, un civil à la recherche de sa femme disparue Mia dans une plantation abandonnée occupée par une famille infectée. Le jeu est disponible sur de nombreuses plateformes, dont PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One et PlayStation VR, et permet l’usage du casque PSVR en mode VR. Classé parmi les genres tir, aventure et réflexion, il affiche un temps de completion de neuf heures pour l’histoire principale et de vingt-huit heures et demie pour le profil completionist, pour un prix de 19,99 euros.
L’accueil critique a été favorable, avec un score Metacritic de 83 et un OpenCritic de 86. Destructoid a jugé que le jeu dépassait ses attentes et tenait de l’instant classique, tandis que God is a Geek a salué un retour au survival horror familier et nouveau à la fois, qualifié de meilleur jeu d’horreur de ces dernières années. Certains joueurs sur Metacritic ont estimé que l’expérience était bien meilleure que prévu et renouvelait la série, tout en notant que l’aspect gameplay pouvait passer au second plan derrière la peur, particulièrement présente dans un prologue très effrayant. Sur Steam, des avis positifs ont exprimé un vif plaisir global malgré une mise en route difficile, et d’autres ont décrit un très bon jeu d’horreur dont le début figure parmi les meilleurs du genre, sans le considérer comme excellent.
