Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, développé par Ubisoft Montreal et édité par Ubisoft Entertainment, est sorti le 11 novembre 2003 sur PlayStation 2, Xbox, Nintendo GameCube, PC et PlayStation 3. Le jeu mêle aventure, réflexion et plateforme dans la Perse médiévale, où le Prince, trompé par le Vizier, libère la malédiction des Sables du Temps sur le royaume de son père et doit la contenir à l'aide de la princesse Farah et du poignard capable de manipuler le temps. L'intrigue le conduit de la prise d'une cité indienne jusqu'à la tour de l'aube d'Azad, ponctuée de pièges, de monstres de sable et du sacrifice de Farah avant un retour en arrière final. La presse a salué ce titre comme un classique, l'Official U.S. Playstation Magazine évoquant l'un de ses jeux préférés grâce à son histoire, son action et ses graphismes, tandis que Play Magazine louait sa beauté et sa jouabilité intuitive ; certains joueurs sur Metacritic et Steam le qualifient d'indispensable ou d'« indémodable ». Le jeu affiche un score Metacritic de 89 et une note agrégée de 86,99, avec un temps de histoire principale d'environ huit heures et demi et une approche complétiste à dix heures et demi.

« Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time es uno de esos juegos que entienden el medio desde la elegancia del sistema. No destaca por la cantidad, sino por la coherencia: plataformas, combate y narrativa están al servicio de una misma idea, el control del tiempo como mecánica y como discurso. El parkour es fluido, legible y expresivo; cada salto tiene intención y cada error forma parte del aprendizaje, no del castigo. El combate es sencillo y, a veces, repetitivo, pero funciona como transición rítmica entre secciones de exploración, sin romper el tono ni la cadencia del conjunto. Donde realmente brilla es en su diseño de niveles: espacios pensados para ser leídos en movimiento, donde la arquitectura guía al jugador sin necesidad de ayudas explícitas. En este sentido, resulta más logrado que Assassin’s Creed: mientras aquella saga expande el parkour hasta diluirlo en mapas abiertos y tareas repetitivas, The Sands of Time lo concentra y lo convierte en lenguaje. Prince of Persia apuesta por el ritmo, la claridad y el control y, por ello, queda encapsulado en su propio reloj de arena, resistente —y ajeno— al paso del tiempo. »
