New Super Mario Bros. U is a side-scrolling 2.5D platform game, and the fourth and latest installment in the New Super Mario Bros. series. As the sequel to New Super Mario Bros. Wii, the game is a follow-up game of New Super Mario Bros. 2. It uses new, more detailed background styles and models and introduces the Flying Squirrel power-up, acquired by Mario and his friends from an item called the Super Acorn, as well as utilizing the Wii U GamePad in Boost Mode. In addition to the core campaign, there are also challenge modes.

« New Super Mario Bros. U is close to the ideal 2D Mario game hinted at by the debut of New Super Mario Bros. seven years ago. It's a more sincere follow-up to Super Mario World than any previous game, and even if its innovations are muted and on the periphery, this is the evolution the series needed. It's a simple question, really: Do you like 2D Mario? If so, play this game. It is that damn good. »

You’ve seen this game before—you’ve played this game before—and yet here it is again, acting like a launch title miracle when it’s really just New Super Mario Bros. wearing a slightly cleaner **** level design isn’t bad—it’s just painfully predictable. Every jump, every secret, every “surprise” feels like it was pulled from a checklist titled “How Not to Innovate.” Even the new stuff, like the acorn power-up, feels less like a bold idea and more like Nintendo saying, “What if we made falling slower count as a feature?”Visually, it’s clean but soulless. It’s like plastic—shiny, polished, and completely devoid of personality. The music? Already forgotten before the level even ends. And don’t get me started on how this was supposed to sell the Wii U—because nothing screams “next-gen” like doing the same thing again but in **** this point, the formula isn’t just safe—it’s asleep at the wheel. This isn’t a bad game. It’s worse: it’s boring. »
