NBA 09: The Inside, développé par SCE San Diego Studio et édité par Sony Computer Entertainment, est sorti le 7 octobre 2008 sur PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2 et PlayStation Portable. Ce jeu de sport, suite de NBA 08, propose un nouveau chapitre du mode « The Life » dans lequel le joueur peut prendre le contrôle d'une superstar créée parmi cinq disponibles et interagir avec trois personnages afin de faire évoluer un scénario variable. Le système de progression d'équipe réapparaît et récompense l'exploration et la réalisation de défis par des accessoires déblocables, tandis que les relations avec coéquipiers et entraîneurs influencent la place du joueur dans l'équipe et sa base de fans. Les modes Franchise et Exhibition sont présents, avec effectifs NBA à jour et moteur Havok pour plus de réalisme. NBA Replay permet de revivre des moments de la saison 07/08 et de télécharger ceux de 08/09 via le PlayStation Network, avec partage de données et parties en ligne. Les commentaires audio sont assurés par Kevin Calabro et Kenny « The Jet » Smith.
L'accueil critique est mitigé, avec une note moyenne de 69. PGNx Media a salué un « solid basketball game » à la base, tandis que GameTrailers a jugé que l'atmosphère demande du travail et que le titre est loin d'une simulation, tout en reconnaissant un côté addictif pour certains. Plusieurs joueurs sur Metacritic estiment au contraire que le jeu est sous-estimé face à la concurrence d'EA et 2K, louant notamment ses graphismes et la qualité sonore des commentaires pour l'époque.

« Un juego muy infravalorado que tuvo que competir con EA y 2K. Los gráficos son excelentes para la época, la calidad del sonido, sobretodo de los comentaristas, es genial. Los partidos son divertidos, aunque quizás en mi opinión, los jugadores son excesivamente ortopédicos y las animaciones no son lo suficientemente fluidas como para poderse medir de tú a tú con la competencia por aquel entonces. Pero a día de hoy, se echa de menos un juego de baloncesto original y moderno. Creo que Sony (en concreto el mismo estudio que hizo NBA09: The Inside) debería retomar esta saga de baloncesto, porque creo que podrían ofrecer una experiencia más divertida que lo que ofrece 2K y así dejaríamos de depender del monopolio de 2K en los juegos de baloncesto. »
« NBA 09: the inside is a very Underrated NBA Game on the Playstation 3 because when i've heard about this game, In my opinion, The reason why i think this game was an Great Underrated NBA Game that was made by Sony. The reason why is because this game had The Life Story where you have 3 different stories on different created players. The Life Story was an amazing game mode Also, they have Player Progressive mode where you create 5 players to upgrade their Attributes by playing game modes so you can get Credits where you can buy your Items, Gear, and Upgrades for your characters. They even have minigames, They have an Franchise Mode which allows you an NBA team and control its player transactions and other things covered by a real General Manager. you have NBA Replay that allow you to real NBA game played in real life and Quick Play mode allow you to play NBA or D-League Teams in a normal match. NBA: 09 the inside is one of the best basketball games on the Playstation 3 and it's my favorite game on the Playstation 3. »
