Gameplay de Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy

CD-Action 85/100

« The climbing mechanics are satisfying, the frustration you’ll have to endure on your road to mastery is sweet, and Foddy’s commentary is intelligent, but mouse controls are physically tiring and need getting used to. [01/2018, p.65] »

« The definition of ragebait. Culprit of destroying thousands of mouses across the globe (Not mine btw). I would sincerely advice impatient people to stay away from this game but happily invite those who crave challenge. But jokes apart it is a masterpiece... »

« Getting Over It is truly frustrating, challenging, and truly tests your temper. I admit that I still haven't finished the game and actually refunded it, putting it on hold, but I think it's a truly excellent game for its uncommon genre. The funniest thing about this game, and probably what makes it stand out from the crowd, is the narrator who never stops reminding you how much you **** at this game. The only major downside I could point out is that this title pioneered what the industry calls "asset flipping": Effectively, all the assets of this game were taken from marketplaces. This doesn't make it a bad game, but it just might kill the developer's creativity and be a sign of a low quality game for some. »

« I played this again recently and I forgot how terrible it **** a whole there are two types of troll games: Troll games that are funny and inventive, but still have a bit of stupidness, and games like this and trap adventure. Games that were meant to be un-fun, games that were meant to get the Youtubers and Twitch Streamers to scream at it (Just as they **** has elements of funniness. At the beginning of the game I thought it was funny that while you're trying to get better at the stupid controls, Bennett Foddy talks over you. The problem is, this is a troll game, and he never stops talking, the controls only get worse because the terrain your moving through gets **** feels weird to give this a bad score because it does succeed fully at its mission- But the mission itself isn't good. And as it stands for 99/100 of sane people, this game isn't fun. It's not fun that the controls are terrible, it's not fun that the game keeps taunting you, it's not fun to not have save states and lose all of your ****'s not a difficult, but fair game, it's a difficult and unfair piece of trash and it doesn't matter how much you convince yourself otherwise, the game isn't fun. »

« When you fall in this game, it hurts. You don't lose any health or anything; there's no fall damage. No, that's not how it hurts. It hurts inside, where it really hurts. It hurts because you have to start over. You lose all the progress you worked so hard to achieve in a matter of seconds. You go up, and up, and up, achieving checkpoint, milestone, breakthrough, just to throw it all away. You start over and it hurts - and it hurts every time. It hurts to start over because you know how much pain you had to endure to achieve what you achieved and you imagine having to go through that pain again. But when you win, when you finally get to the very top, something changes inside you. You feel good. You feel no pain. You feel alive. And after the credits roll, you find yourself doing something quite strange. You click "New Game" and start over. But this time, it doesn't hurt. Verdict: EXCEPTIONALLY GOOD »

« I killed a man after finishing this game. I spent 30 years behind bars, I went to rehab and now I'm clean since 5 years. »

« DISCLAIMER: I have not finished the game yet, my opinion may change Getting Over It is a rage game. It is supposed to be frustrating, so expect to be angry. My problem with the game isn't that it tries to make you angry. The problem is that it is often times not clear I a thing is supposed to make me angry. Like how the camera lag behind you, and with it the cursor, making it harder to reposition your hammer when falling. I am completely unsure if that is even intended, or just a result of the camera and movement systems clashing together. The climbing itself is relaxing in my opinion and the commentary felt engaging. The only time I felt bad was when I got stuck. But that wasn't frustration, but boredom. The climbing and the falls didn't make me angry. But the game is supposed to make you angry, so in a way it failed at that. I still tend to open the game whenever I am stressed to chill out. A rage game shouldn't be like that. »
