FIFA 17, développé par EA Vancouver et EA Romania et édité par EA Sports, est sorti le 27 septembre 2016 sur PC (Microsoft Windows), PlayStation 4 et Xbox One. Ce jeu de sport, propulsé par le moteur Frostbite 3, propose pour la première fois dans la série de vivre son histoire sur et en dehors du terrain à travers le mode The Journey, où l'on incarne Alex Hunter, jeune étoile montante de la Premier League, évoluant dans n'importe quel club du championnat sous des entraîneurs authentiques et aux côtés de grands joueurs, au rythme des hauts et bas émotionnels de sa carrière.
L'accueil critique a été favorable, le titre obtenant un score de 84 sur Metacritic et de 83 sur OpenCritic, pour une note agrégée de 82,70. Gaming Nexus a salué le passage au moteur Frostbite permettant une progression du gameplay avec de meilleures mécaniques et une IA plus intelligente, tout en relevant l'intérêt du mode The Journey, tandis que GameOver.gr a qualifié l'ensemble de meilleur FIFA en années et de package captivant pour des mois. Certains joueurs sur Metacritic ont pour leur part exprimé leur enthousiasme pour cette première FIFA sous Frostbite et son mode Histoire de Hunter, perçu comme un renouveau, et l'un d'eux a indiqué que c'était son FIFA préféré de tous les temps.
