Computer Tycoon is a grand strategy and business management hybrid about Computer Evolution and starting your own company in the 70s. Lead the research race until 2034, create the best hardware and operating system, take care of your infrastructure, handle your marketing, lead your team of experts, find video game gems to promote them on your platforms, conquer the global market, and become immortal!

Computer Tycoon differs from other building/tycoon games because it has a "grand strategy game" aspect. You will control your "computer empire" by viewing a world map and managing resources. You won't build a park or railways, and you won't arrange furniture in offices, instead of these you will analyze the market and find ways to be profitable, reinvest in research, and push out your opponents from the business.

Unlike other games, here you will see your opponents' products and their pricing, which will compete with yours on a real, simulated market. Computer Tycoon is more complex than most modern Tycoon games today. This means that the game has a steeper learning curve, but on the Beginner difficulty level (especially by turning off opponents) you can have a Sandbox-like experience as well.

Start your adventure in the 70s as a small business somewhere in the world. Learn more about hardware and software inventions that were the first steps to our current modern world, and get a taste of what is waiting for us in the future. Find the classic video games and help a new culture to be born.

In Computer Tycoon the decisions you make during development really matter. Take advantage of the technology, upgrade and design combinations! Does your product need more computing capacity or should you focus more on features, low price, or prestige? Maybe change to portable computers or develop more easy-to-use Operating Systems? These decisions will have a major impact on the success of your company.

Smartly expand your corporation into multiple countries, and build more offices, factories, laboratories, and other required facilities. Poor countries have cheaper labor, but richer countries will give you more educated engineers.

Having the best product isn't enough. Finding the right partner and managers is as important as a good product. Balance your budget well between development, production, marketing, and expansion.

You can win the game by becoming a monopoly or reaching the technological singularity if you are fast enough - but living through 60 years of computer history is let alone a victory!

The game is in an EA alpha state. You might find bugs and missing/simplified features. Everything is subject to change. Please read the EA details! Also here is a brief list of what is and isn't included (yet):

VERSION 0.9.9.16 is going live in the Default Branch and NEWS!

Hello Tycoons, The Open Beta Branch moves to the Default Branch! So first of all, the important stuff that will affect players right now! I'm moving the Open Beta Branch's current build (v0.9.9.16) to the Normal Branch. I won't even change the version number. I will simply move it to the normal branch. It means that if somebody installs the game now - that's the version that will be installed automatically. This is a big deal because many of you still haven't played that version. It contains years of added features and improvements, and after all this time, I think it's ready to be pushed to the main branch. It definitely has some flaws, but compared to the original version, it's still superior in many ways.Moving it to the main branch will also help me gather more feedback, which will be critical for the upcoming updates. This means that your current saves will no longer work unless you opt into a legacy branch that I will create for the previous default branch version (v0.9.8.03). This way, you can finish your current games. Here's how to do that. Don't worry, it's not complicated: https://steamcommunity.com/app/686680/discussions/0/4031350783733793401/ (This is where you can opt in into different versions/branches)Current Development: The CTN FeatureI'm close to finishing the main new feature of the game: CTN, which stands for Computer Tycoon News.Back when I played Master of Orion 2 as a kid (a timeless strategy game), I really loved the news show that talked about recent events in the game and occasionally gave feedback on how the different empires were doing. CTN is something similar, but it features a much wider variety of news. What kind of news? Well, there are five main categories:Random Events The news show will partially replace the pop-up messages for random events such as Product Recalls, Natural Disasters, or Viral Marketing Campaigns. Not all of them, though, since some events simply aren't newsworthy.Company Interactions The news show will report on Company Interactions such as court verdicts resulting in prison sentences, companies becoming rivals or allies, or even when a company starts having financial troubles.Historical Events This category is mostly about nostalgia and educational content delivered in the usual satirical style. The history of computer technology is full of interesting events that I really wanted to feature. Things like the Y2K Bug, spam, or the first email ever sent can give players some perspective.Milestones These news stories are mainly about the player. The news show will highlight achievements made by the player (and sometimes by competitors as well). Newsworthy accomplishments such as releasing the first exclusive video game or achieving worldwide sales will be covered.Rankings These will mostly be top-three lists featuring the best gaming machines, the best-selling computers, technology leaders, and more. Their purpose is to help players better understand their position in the world. Some of the things covered by the news show are events that players should know about immediately, such as certain random events or two competitors becoming partners. These are considered "breaking news" and will immediately generate a news broadcast for the player to watch. Most news, however, concerns things that don't require immediate attention, so they will be presented in yearly broadcasts.I plan to add all of these categories to the game's options menu so players can disable any categories they don't enjoy. If they do so, random events will continue to use the current pop-up system. This feature required me to create a large number of texts and illustrations. The news show itself also has three unique visual styles to reflect different eras: one retro, one modern, and one futuristic, each with its own music.I have high hopes that CTN will help players better understand and connect with the universe of the game while also making the world feel more reactive and alive. The diplomacy system in Computer Tycoon was already partially inspired by Master of Orion 2, so it feels fitting that this feature is inspired by that game as well. What Else? There is still a lot on my plate.I recently conducted some in-house testing to see what inexperienced players of the genre do when they first start playing, and I've created a dedicated to-do list based on the results to help them. On top of that, I still have plenty of my own ideas planned, as well as a long list of recommendations and suggestions from the community. Some of the things I want to work on include extending the research tree (which would also increase the game's playtime by roughly 10 years), reworking user group and magazine priorities and their balance, adding some visual representation of consoles within the Home Computer category, improving how CEO relationships work, and expanding the Sandbox mode.I will most likely release these features separately from CTN, as I know the community would prefer more frequent updates rather than fewer large updates that take much longer to develop. So I will likely split up the last major update into smaller installments. The game is close to version 1.0!LocalizationsDon't worry, I hear you! :)Holy! The game's text file is already longer than the first Harry Potter book... Read this, if you'd like to know more about localizations: LINK I originally wanted to use a service called Localizor, but unfortunately it is no longer available. That's a shame because it was probably our best option.Lately, I've been considering a different approach. I may create a large text resource file that the community can edit on their own computers, possibly with AI-generated translations provided as a starting point. I'm not entirely sure yet, but given the current situation, this seems like the most realistic path forward. The game now contains around 70,000 words, which is again... roughly the size of a Harry Potter book. Since the game isn't generating enough revenue to support professional translators, I will most likely have to rely on community translations for all target languages. I wanted to have professionals for Mandarin and German at least, but it is what it is. Since CT is a passion project I'm happy to offer anything instead of nothing. That said, this process cannot begin until the texts are finalized. Please understand that I'm developing the game alone, and even managing the English text is already a significant amount of work, especially when volunteers are involved. Continuously changing texts while translations are being worked on would create a lot of unnecessary complications, so that's something I want to avoid. Ending WordsPlease keep the feedback coming, I really need it! Thank you very much for all the support and the patience! ^^* Also thank you so much for the reviews, they help a LOT! * Have a lot of FUN, my friends! VERSION 0.9.9.16 is out in the "Open Beta Branch" NOW!

Hello Tycoons, Over the last few weeks I've changed/fixed a lot of text in the game, thanks to your reports and just going through all the important window hints again. Honestly, it is sad to see how much I can refine/fix still even tho I have multiple people helping out with proofreading. Please guys, keep it up, I'm super thankful!I have also fixed several serious bugs in the game, the new version is significantly better now. Enjoy! This version that I'm talking about is in the Open Beta Branch, please read the next paragraph if you'd like to try it!How can I try it?To play it, you just have to right-click on Computer Tycoon in your Steam client, then click on "Properties", then there click on "Betas" and select the "Open Beta Branch" from the dropdown list, save and restart your client or your computer so that Steam can install this version instead of the previous one you had on your computer. Full ChangelogChangesI've replaced the graphics settings buttons with dropdowns in the settings for better ease of use.I've changed the leveling button from +-10 points to +-5 points.Bugfixes/TweaksThere was a critical bug in the customer simulation regarding hardware sales causing irregular high sales not considering parameters and product age and also allowing hardware accumulation to artificially increase profits and other issues. FixedThere was a serious bug in the game that forbid AI players from updating their CPUs and a few other parts at the late stages of the game due to incorrect heat reduction tries for them. FixedThere was a weird error that under certain circumstances made the AI players sell their hardware parts for random numbers - effectively forbiding them to profit from those. FixedThere was a possible exploit in the Negotiation system that let players get technology from opponents without them being able to sue - by playing around gifts and contract abandonment etc. FixedThe player could access bankrupt companies on the Connection Graph. FixedLate game it could happen that CEO's asked for negative amounts of money... FixedI've fixed a bug in the AI's research algorithm that sometimes made it possible for the AI player to research faster than they should have been able. The viral marketing event affected hardware sales negatively. FixedSometimes the office levels could stuck on a level and the graphics couldn't update. FixedI've improved the AI's algorithm in selecting what techs they are willing to buy/trade.Scenarios list start from the end (scrollbar at the bottom) and the CEO avatar chooser went to its end too. FixedIn the challenge mode where you should not expand I've removed the expansion notification ball. You could allocate LPs to markets in continental mode (without the first site being down) and in the communist mode - by just double clicking on the market's line in the market list. FixedThere were color selection/coloring issues on the map in the last version. FixedThe fullscreen toggle didn't update the screen mode without a restart. FixedThe hover area for the tooltip on "Laboratory" in the Site Manager was wonky, it seemed to only pop the tooltip when hovering over the bottom of the icon. FixedThe flashing effect of the tutorial arrows bled trough the tutorial window. FixedOne graph showed a (meaningless) negative y axis until it had data in it. FixedAfter leaving the CEO home page, the ocean wave sounds kept playing. (Mostly by opening the load window). FixedWhen the game was paused with an empty research queue and then research was added, the research bar still stayed empty until the game was unpaused and a little time has passed. FixedYou were able to use the technique of clicking on your own character's skill and then goign back to your partner to break the 80 point skill cap for character creation. FixedSaved games didn't show up on the load screen automatically without exiting the game. FixedTyposIn the tutorial it said "Two years went bye just in a second..." should be "by". Fixed" . . . you start in 1990 and has all previous technology . . " Should read " . . . have all previous . . ." (have instead of has) - Parts and Profits scenario. FixedOn the scenario screen " . . . even tho you cannot build factories - so \ sell computers." Should be " . . . or sell computers." ('or' instead of 'so') FixedOn the Custom Difficulty screen, the word "Strenght" \ should be spelled "Strength" - gth instead of ght . . . several instances. FixedIn the "Logistic Price" tooltip on the Market Details window, it says "bitgger" instead of "bigger". FixedIn the Offer a Research Agreement tooltip: "thanks to you collaboration" should be "your". FixedText Changes"Mom will be proud of me. I showed you how is smarter!!!" was replaced by "I showed you that me is smarter!!!" for Axel.Tutorial said that the information window is the bottom right, but it actually shows up in the bottom left. FixedTutorial said to click "passive" and then "find another manager", but "find another manager" is under "active". FixedTutorial stated to click the gear and then "Upgrade" button, but there is no "Upgrade" button, it says "Build". Fixed"Welcome *to* (not in) the tutorial", "build computers *for*" or "sell computers *to* whoever is interested." FixedAt the beginning the tutorial said "Now you can add techs to your hardware" -- missing a space: "thoughtful about them! When". FixedTooltip for "Cost in $" is backwards. It says "Empty until you don't have a factory" should say "Empty" (or "none"/"zero"/"$0") "until you have a factory." remove "don't". FixedTutorial window language for new manager: "They are pretty important *IN* the long run", not "on" the long run. FixedSame window, typo: "crucial" not "cruicial", in fact this whole sentence could be rewritten as: "Finding software and games is crucial for creating a sellable product. You can also espionage, sabotage, or gain fans who will buy exclusively from you, among other options." --- Sellable is also a weird word. Maybe "viable" would be better. FixedIn the "What is this" screen of the "check home" page, there is a line which *almost* sounds rude. "Is that familiar to you?" The better phrasing would be "Does that sound familiar to you?" Also, shortly after, just another natural language adjustment, "If that is enough to you" should be "If that is enough for you" FixedThe help text whenever you highlight the question mark under cooperation requests had the text for the research cooperation deal instead. FixedThe No-Spy Agreement Termination screen had incorrect hints and button texts. FixedLocalizationsDon't worry, I hear you! :)Holy! The game's text file is already longer than the first Harry Potter book... Read this, if you'd like to know more about localizations: LINK Ending WordsPlease keep the feedback coming, I really need it! I hope you have a great time with the latest features! ^^* Also thank you so much for the reviews, they help a LOT! * Have a lot of FUN, my friends! VERSION 0.9.9.15 is out in the "Open Beta Branch" NOW!

Hello Tycoons, We are slowly getting there! :) I'm happy to release a new version into the Open Beta Branch. It's version 0.9.9.15 - which adds new game modes (the "Scenarios & Challenges"), custom difficulty options and QOL stuff. Read the news post to know more. After this, I can work on reworking the tech tree of the game and lots of small tasks and balancing, steam integrations, etc. After those, I will launch the localization process - and prepare the game for its graduation from Early Access. How can I try it?To play it, you just have to right-click on Computer Tycoon in your Steam client, then click on "Properties", then there click on "Betas" and select the "Open Beta Branch" from the dropdown list, save and restart your client or your computer so that Steam can install this version instead of the previous one you had on your computer. This version cannot load your earlier saves!1 - Sandbox ModeThis is something that was asked many times over the years. People asked for a "Sandbox Mode". You could kinda do that earlier too - since all you had to do is turning off your opponents and play like that, but now there is a dedicated game mode for that with extra starting money. If you just want to relive the history of computers, then you are covered. Here there is definitely no real challenge anymore.2 - Scenarios & ChallengesIn an earlier version, the game has received random events - to make things a bit more dynamic. This time, I've added the long awaited special game modes: Scenarios & Challenges. These modes are for those who want a new challenge or just want to try some role-playing. Many asked for being able to start in a communist market, or being able to start from the PC era where they can already create only hardware parts and do business like that. Now you can.The game offers now 8 of these. Let me just copy here their in-game descriptions:Thief of ProgressWho needs innovation when deception works just as well? You cannot build Research Labs or Recreation facilities, but you’ve mastered the arts of trade and theft. Amass $10,000,000,000 and prove that the greatest achievements can be built on stolen dreams. The Underdog's GambitStarting in 1984, you’re late to the game, but not out of the fight. With double the starting funds but lagging far behind in technology and expansion, you must claw your way to the top. Can you turn disadvantage into dominance? The Billion-Dollar BailoutBuried under $25,000,000 in loans with no way to borrow more, you’re on the brink of collapse. Can you claw your way to success by amassing over $1 billion? Maybe you can, but how fast? For the Motherland!Lead the sole company in Communist markets, showcasing the strength of planned economies. Free from competition, focus on innovation and advanced technology to demonstrate that unity and strategy can surpass the chaotic capitalist world. Then in 1982 expand globally and prove your approach leads the way forward. The ContinentalWhy conquer the globe when one continent is enough? Build and sell exclusively within the continent where you start (Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Europe or Australia) for the entirety of the game. With limited markets and tougher competition, can you still rise to dominate the industry? The Billionaire's Backup PlanYou’ve made billions, but what’s the point without something absurd to show for it? The only way to win is to buy the Star Portal, the most expensive CEO item, by 2034. Fail, and all your fortune will be for nothing. Is the universe calling, or are you missing the coordinates to dial? The Tech BrokerWho needs factories when you have ideas? In this scenario, you cannot manufacture anything. Instead, you focus entirely on research, selling your groundbreaking technology to competitors. Can you turn innovation into profit and emerge victorious? Parts & ProfitsStep into 1990 as a supplier to the PC revolution. With access to all technology from 1970 to 1989, your focus is on creating and selling PC components, you can't sell end-user computers. Can you build a billion-dollar empire as the backbone of the industry?3 - Custom DifficultyI've created a new difficulty level, because I've got feedback that the leap from "Intern" (the easiest level) to "Engineer" (the second level) is too great. So I've created a new one just exactly between these two, called "Developer". Also, now you can create your own difficulty level. The game offers around 16 different variables to adjust the difficulty of the game. Eight changing difficulty stuff for all players and another eight controlling competition difficulty. Please let me be honest here - I did not test all the variations myself. It would be just too much haha. But the same variables control the difficulty for the dedicated levels we have. I can imagine that if you set things way too hard in the base variables and way too easy in the AI variables - then the AI might fail easily. But now it is all up to you - if that's what you want, you can do it, too.4 - QOL and other ChangesI refer here to things like being able to save your opponents' settings, or being able to load a game right from a game (so you don't have to return to the starting screen anymore). I've altered the tutorial a bit here and there, I've modified a few screens etc. There is a long to-do list for these, so I'm not stopping here. I hope that you will like the changes!5 - LocalizationsDon't worry, I hear you! :)Holy! The game's text file is already longer than the first Harry Potter book... Read this, if you'd like to know more about localizations: LINK 6 - Ending WordsDo some of you remember how this project looked and played like at the start of 2017? It's crazy. Thanks for being here and supporting me! I will do my best to deliver as soon as I can.* Also thank you so much for the reviews, they help a LOT! * Have a lot of FUN, my friends!
