Defunct Valve card game Artifact sort of comes back to life, again

Once upon a time there was a card game called Artifact, created by Steam, Half-Life, and Dota juggernaut Valve. This title never performed particularly well, being beset by issues on all sides running the gamut from its approach to monetization to players simply being baffled by its existence. Eventually, all work on the title ceased, it was set as free to play - and that's where the story ended. Read the rest of the story... Valve's abandoned card game suddenly experiences a surge in players

Here's a news story I didn't expect to be writing today, or to be honest - any day. Artifact appears to be back. Valve's forgotten card game was last updated in 2021 and despite being free to play like Hearthstone, its player numbers have sunk well below triple digits. That's all just changed with a huge player surge putting the game in a far healthier state, but it may not be entirely real. Read the rest of the story... NFT games will be every bit as successful as Artifact

It's seems like it's impossible to have avoided hearing about them, and if you have then I envy you. NFTs are "an important part of the future of our industry" according to EA. For Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot, blockchain is a "revolution" in gaming. Non-fungible tokens, a blockchain-backed means of owning digital assets like ugly drawings of monkeys, are being talked up as the next big thing in gaming, but there's one problem: no one's been able to tell me what the Hell for? For all the interest NFTs are currently generating on social media and in tech board rooms, it's hard to see a bright future for them in videogames. Most of what they promise for players is already possible using non-blockchain technology, and the one advantage they offer - that of portable digital ownership - is unimaginable in the current universe of triple-A games publishing. If you want to see the future of NFTs in games, look no further than the fate of Valve's tragic collectible card game, Artifact. Based on characters and concepts from the massively popular Dota 2, Artifact was designed with help from Magic: The Gathering creator Richard Garfield and used a unique business model: players could buy and sell cards outside of the game by using the Steam Marketplace. Rare and powerful cards would increase in value, but players were free to trade or sell cards as they saw fit. Read the rest of the story... Avis des critiques et joueurs

Critiques de la Presse (Metacritic)

Screen Rant 90/100

« One of the best digital card games ever released, with the caveat that even with so many great selling points, it's also an incredible investment in time and brain power to get to a point of competency. »

Destructoid 85/100

« It is for people who enjoy card games with an incredible set of fair and unique mechanics that reward out-playing your opponent over luck and randomness. And while it may be based on Dota 2, with a lot to love for its fans, knowledge of the Heroes or universe is in no way needed to enjoy Artifact. All you'll need is $20 and an open and creative mind. »

Game Informer 85/100

« Artifact pulls a ton of flavor from Dota 2, but it’s not necessarily a game for Dota 2 players. Artifact is instead a highly cerebral card game of push and pull, with intense resource allocation and randomization management. Artifact is absolutely not for everyone, but it excels at creating a crazy strategy cocktail pulling from every bottle on the shelf. For card game fans, Artifact is not to be missed. »

IGN 85/100

« Artifact is a challenging, deep, and surprisingly approachable card game that breaks many of the conventions I’ve come to expect from the genre. That mechanical bliss is complemented by countless Easter eggs and detailed lore, but I am starting to miss a more meaningful progression system to keep me engaged long term. Its physical card game model has ended up being one of the more reasonable around, and the completely level playing field of Draft mode is so fun it’s worth the price of admission even if you don’t want to spend another cent. »

PCGamesN 80/100

« Robust tactics and elegant design ensure Artifact’s often sublime strategy isn’t complex. But a lack of long-term goals and a risky monetisation strategy leaves the game’s future feeling uncertain. »

Multiplayer.it 80/100

« Artifact is a marvelous Trading Card Game with deep mechanics and beautiful art style. You might be upset for the businness model, but the gameplay it's an absolute gem. »

PC Gamer 80/100

« Building the best decks will cost you, but Artifact is an intricate and rewarding card game. »

GameSpot 80/100

« It would be nice to see some more extensive options for those wanting to play by themselves or in non-competitive settings, but beyond that, Artifact is a great showing. »

« True face of Valve and #GabeNewellMore. Third-party game designer Richard Garfield must be involved because Valve does not have true designers. Saying people are dumb because not understand how amazing an is Artifact. Monetized like other games where people spend money without hesitation like P2W Chinese garbage DOTA2 only because it is DOTA2. All scammed players don't get any refund; they can "sell cards on Steam Store". Valve "develop" a second version, but without Garfield (which ran like a rat because "artifact was complete") they failed quickly. But don't forget to congratulate yourself on how successful it was. Valve is detached from reality and their only hope is sales on Steam with a 30 % margin. The ugly immoral business of people, which not deserve even one cent. #StopSteam #FreeGameIndustry #StopGabeNewell »

« Artifact (classic) is an amazing game, even as it stands now (totally abandoned). Had the developers supported it properly upon release (updates, game modes, balance changes, etc) it would have been very successful, I have no doubt. All of the problems with the game were with the game/tournament modes, lack of player progression, new player experience, and lack of support/updates. The fundamental gameplay is fantastic. At the first sign of trouble they scrapped the entire game and made a new, much worse version of Artifact from the ground up. I can't believe how little confidence Valve had in their own game. Many games have recovered from bad launches--Valve didn't even try. They trusted the judgment of the internet and endless superficial criticisms of the game, rather than their own hearts which guided them to create and release the game in the first place. They turned an absolutely great, unique, and destined to be classic game into an embarrassing footnote. Such a strange and sad situation. There's so much depth to the gameplay that it's still worth playing, potentially for many hours, despite being a dead game. »

« Why Gabe!? Why did you made artifact instead of giving some cool updates for DOTA 2?! If you want to make another game why don't you make Half-life 3, Left4Dead 3, portal 3 and add team fortress updates?! Why don't you add those. This game has alot of micro-transaction, you even have to pay to play and play to win. There are no such things is stradegy, it's all random and you have to depends heaily on your luck to win! »

LVVrunner 0/10

« The greedy Gabe Newell made the most greedy game. And when it failed without having time to take off, for several years he made this ridiculous product free of charge. A shameful sight. »

Fjuk 0/10

« Игра стоит кучу денег, так ещё и в самой игре покупай кучу паков ради топ колоды »

ChilliFire92 0/10

« Half Life 3 died for this. Valve should just let this die too. And start making proper games again. »

BulgarianCritic 1/10

« Gets pretty dull after 3 hours and the only way for you to actually improve and add more cards to your collection is via using money + dont forget that the main price of the game is pretty big so i would suggest to everyone to avoid it if they are looking for a card game. There are many f2p card games out there which will allow you to test them out and see if they are more of the thing you liked while theres a huge risk with artifact + there are barely any players anymore so lmao »

Gampy 0/10

« For now Artifact has smaller player base than Gothic 2 (a 17 years old single player game). Enough said. »
