Le jeu permet aux joueurs de se familiariser avec l'assemblage de leur propre ordinateur de jeu sans les risques et coûts associés, à l'aide de tutoriels et d'une sélection de composants précis et réalistes fonctionnant comme dans la réalité. Dans le mode Carrière, le joueur dirige son entreprise de réparation depuis un atelier et réalise des tâches variées comme des améliorations, du SAV ou des configurations complètes en équilibrant son budget. L'extension IT confie l'assistance informatique d'Irratech Corp avec plus de 20 heures de contenu gratuit, et le jeu propose un large éventail de pièces agréées, de refroidissement et de personnalisation LED ou watercooling, avec possibilité d'overclocker via le BIOS et de tester les performances dans 3DMark. Après plus de 650 000 téléchargements de sa démo pré-alpha, la simulation s'est étoffée pour devenir un jeu complet. La presse a salué l'authenticité et l'attention aux détails de cet « un des meilleurs titres du genre » selon New Game Network, tout en notant qu'il reste limité et simpliste, tandis que SpazioGames y voit une bonne expérience pour comprendre la composition d'un PC sans pour autant apprendre à le monter sérieusement. Certains joueurs sur Metacritic louent un jeu chill et immersif sans être trop complexe, d'autres regrettent un titre daté et conseillent sa suite, et des avis positifs sur Steam mentionnent une variété qui évite l'ennui malgré un tour facilement fait. Le score OpenCritic s'établit à 70 et la note agrégée à 69,76, pour un temps de completion de 23 heures et demie en histoire principale et 93 heures et demie en completionist, au prix de 19,99 euros.

« PC Building simulator est un bon jeu de simu dans son domaine. Assez réaliste pour être immersif, mais pas trop complexe non plus. Le jeu est chill et j'aime y passé quelques heures au moins chaque année. Il faudrait que je **** à essayer le 2. Une note moyenne car le gameplay reste quand même assez répétitif, ce qui n'est pas tant négatif dans un jeu de simu comme l'on peut s'y attendre. »
« Outdated game. Unfortunately it's no longer on Steam but i got it before its cancellation. Must try PCBS 2 which is much more detailed and polished. For people with small budget, you may try but PCBS 2 gets huge discount sometimes, or if you want to finish PCBS 1 welp go for it. Before PCBS 2 released i loved it, that's why it wins a 6. »

« PC building simulator is definitely a great simulator and one of a kind, this game for those who want to get acquainted with the assembly, it is great for people who like to do crazy projects or for those who want to relax (to the relaxing songs of Gorillaz very well come!). However, 65-70% percent of the tasks in the campaign monotonous and stupidly generated. Yes, and bugs, they are in the game. And the graphics in the game is not perfect, so even the optimization is so itself. 8/10 »
