Trover Saves the Universe
Trover Saves the Universe

« Trover Saves the Universe is a great addition to the PSVR lineup, offering some solid gameplay with a comedy flavoring that brings it to the next level. »
« Trover Saves the Universe is pretty special. It’s genuinely hilarious — I found myself laughing out loud quite a bit. It not only works in VR, but it’s actually better that way. It’s colorful in both art style and language, with a story that effortlessly balances complete silliness with deeper themes about intergalactic intolerance and the meaning of friendship. Overall, it was a joy to experience, and that feeling overrides any nitpicks that might come up along the way. »
« An ambitious and solid first outing from the team at Squanch Games. There’s a real game here with some actual replayability thanks to hidden power babies, a few branching paths, and the crazy amount of voice acting that went into it. It looks good, it plays [well], and it is guaranteed to make you laugh out loud several times during your adventure. At a price point of $29.99, you’re getting quite a deal considering the amount of content being delivered, especially for a VR experience. While Trover has a few flaws, the overall package executes what it sets out to accomplish remarkably well. »
« There are lengthier, more complex and challenging and expensive action-adventure games, none of which will make you cry-laugh in your stuffy headset like Trover Saves The Universe, easily the best use of PS VR since Astro Bot. »
« To say Trover Saves the Universe is a good VR game would be an understatement. It perfectly blends over-the-top comedy and solid combat while making the most of the VR technology at hand by dragging players into the world and making them centre of the story. Its brand of comedy will not be to everyone's liking, but I still think Trover Saves the Universe stands on its own as one of the best VR games released to date. »
« Trover Saves the Universe is a short and sweet VR platformer wrapped in one of the most ridiculous video game stories you’ll ever see. Justin Roiland and Squanch Games have done an excellent job of taking the ludicrous, freeform humor of Rick and Morty and molding it around a straightforward but enjoyable 3D brawler – even if it’s lacking the complex and well-crafted plots the best episodes of that show is known for. It loses something when played in 2D, but takes such great advantage of its unique VR mechanics that it’s one anyone (or at least anyone over 17, given its rating) with a headset should try. »
« Despite the imperfections, Trover Saves the Universe is a blast, a genuinely funny, entertaining and well-made game that I enjoyed from start to finish. You don’t have to play it in VR, but I recommend that you do since that was primarily what it was designed for. And at $30.00 US, you get a good value for the price, plus the developers have announced that they’ll be adding free DLC in the future. But trust me, just hearing all of Justin Roiland’s hilarious dialogue alone is well worth it. »
« Trover Saves the Universe is slick, unexpected, and vulgar beyond belief. You likely already know if the sort of humor in Trover is for you, and if its not, you should give Trover a wide berth. But if you are the sort of sicko that likes this sort of stuff, there is a surprisingly solid game lurking beneath the rapid-fire jokes and bizarre imagery. »

« Saying this game does everything high on life does but a little bit worse, is possibly one of my worst early review comments. While both games may be made by the same development team, they have practically nothing in common besides the acid trip kind of vibe. It's a comedy game, what do you expect from it? Of course things aren't gonna make sense, and of course things will just happen because it's main focus is to hammer down on the commedical aspects. I can't go easy on it though. At it's best, it's an 8/10. At it's lowest though, it's like, a 4/10. This game shines with it's world and comedy, but they have to go back to the medicore story eventually. Again, the music, art and direction of the game is amazing, but the story is just kinda.. ehhh. If they had a better story, which is a problem with most if not all Squanch Games, than this could easily be a 8 or even an 9, but it simply cannot go past 7 due to it's medicore story, inconsistent story and really, just sour unfunny moments. 7/10. »
« I love this game. The humor is ingeniously tailored to the VR experience. It makes fun of videos games, makes fun of the player, makes fun of itself. It's a hilarious game. And the gameplay is considerably fun, albiet pretty basic. I didn't encounter a single technical issue. It felt well polished. Only complaint is that it felt a little short-- there's a DLC (dingle lickin' cult) on the way-- and not being able to save separate games. »
« I really enjoyed this game. In my opinion the dialogue is the best part of this game and the comedy really lands for me. However, I could totally understand how it might be a bit much for some people as it is basically Rick and Morty at it's raunchiest but nonstop. The visuals are also very nice and immersive. The gameplay and story are the most lacking aspects of this game, although they are a servicable vehicle for this short comedic experience. »
« Had a lot of fun with this game, loved it on VR and made me laugh on several occasions, the game doesn't feel longer than necessary so it's 100/100 »
« #DashReviews Trover Saves the Universe is a 3D platforming hack and slash game made by the co-creator of Rick and Morty. With a few smaller games under his belt, this is the studios first full-length game. Borrowing heavily from the Rick and Morty style and improve humor, will this game fall under the shadow of the successfully TV show or does this game have charm of its own? You play as two characters throughout this adventure, a chairopian, a creature that just sits around and has a controller (the self-insert player character) that’s got his dogs stolen by a weird bird creature named, Glorton that wants to stick the dogs in his eyeholes to make him all powerful. The chairopian has the job of controlling the eyehole monster named Trover, he is forced to help you get your dog’s back to save the universe. Roll credits. It’s a weird story that mostly told through improv humor. There are certainly some funny moments throughout the story but some characters and situations can get annoying and grating in a few parts. Some jokes are repeated over and over again and some are just straight up crude and vulgar without having any joke to support it. There a lot to love about Justin Roiland’s humor but a bit more variety in the jokes and a tighter script might have helped the story. The gameplay is one of the most fun aspects of Trover, especially when experienced in VR. The hack and slash and platforming mechanics are as simple as they come but they work well and there is a lot of fun to be had mowing down the many Rick voiced enemies and exploring the landscape. There are a few more complex mechanics near the end like throwing items to help Trover or heavy swing attacks, I just wish they did not wait ‘til the last few hours to put these things in the game. Enemies get repetitive around this time as well since the new attacks near the end are underutilized. This is remedied by the VR and how you play in this style but non-VR player will likely get bored of this game faster. There is free DLC coming soon to this game so hopefully, it will use the new attacks to its full advantage later. After you beat the story mode, there is not much in the way of replay value other than getting all the collectibles, another good distraction if you are playing a VR and want to see everything. It’s a solid 8-hour experience but it's lacking in variety and could have been a bit longer if said variety was put in. The game's world is really cartoony and fun to look at. It looks great graphically and runs at a smooth frame rate with no technical issues. There are short load screens that only appear once in a blue moon. The soundtrack is mediocre, most songs don’t stand out. There's not much more to say other than this game runs great. Trover Saves the Universe is a great starting point for Justin Roiland’s game studio. It has many fun ideas and concept with the only problem is that some of these ideas are not fully realized (unless that’s for the free DLC). Some humor is repetitive and stale but there are many great moments too. The base game can be a bit too simple and boring without the help of VR. If you plan to buy this game, I only recommend this game to those who like Justin Roiland’s humor and have a VR headset. If this sounds like a game for you, you can’t go wrong since the game is only priced at $30. Without VR I would give this game a 6/10, slightly above average but with VR it’s an easy 7/10. Pros: +Fun World to Explore +VR exploration and combat +Funny story moments +$30 Price Point +Free DLC Cons: -Repetitive and Vulgar With No Context Humor -State game without VR -Lack of Enemy Variety - Weapons are underutilized »
« This plays like if Rick and Morty had a baby with Conkers Bad Fur Day. Crude but funny jokes, same platform double jump/hovering levels. The only thing is that the jokes are repetitive and the game is super easy and short. You can beat it about 6-7 hours and nab yourself an easy platinum trophy while you do it. I tried the dlc right after I beat the game but was already too bored of the gameplay by then to continue, so I gave up. I waited for the game to drop in price (I think it was 40%) when I bought it, bringing it just over $20 Canadian, which was still too much. It'd be a fun pick up if you get for under $10. »
« Excellent game! If you are a fan of Rick & Morty you’ll love this game, even if you are not it’s still a hysterical take on a game from the minds of Rick and Morty! My ONLY criticism would be is it left me wanting more! It was a little short about 5-6 hours depending on how fast you move through it, that being said you can’t beat it for the price 10 out of 10! »
« Playing on PSVR and this game is hilarious and fun. Im loving the gameplay and how interactive it is. Wish I picked it up sooner. Very well done Squanch Games. »
