Sorti le 31 octobre 2000 sur Dreamcast, NBA 2K1 constitue le deuxième volet de la série éponyme développée par Visual Concepts et éditée sous le label Sega Sports R&D. Ce titre de simulation sportive marque une évolution notable par rapport à son prédécesseur en introduisant pour la première fois dans la franchise un mode multijoueur en ligne, ainsi que des terrains de streetball — dont The Cage, Rucker Park, Franklin Park et Goat Park — remplaçant les traditionnelles enceintes fermées. Le rappeur Redman fait également une apparition dans le jeu. À sa sortie, la presse spécialisée a salué la qualité de l'expérience, Games Radar estimant qu'il s'agissait « sans doute du meilleur jeu de basket » malgré un léger ralentissement réseau, tandis que Daily Radar le décrivait comme « aussi bon que le basket peut l'être ». Le jeu obtient une note agrégée de 73,93.
