Microsoft Flight Simulator X, développé et édité par Microsoft Game Studios, est sorti le 13 octobre 2006 sur PC (Microsoft Windows). Ce titre de simulation constitue l'aboutissement de près de 25 ans de la franchise Flight Simulator et plonge le joueur dans un monde riche et réaliste proposant des dizaines d'aéronefs ainsi que des missions interactives. Le mode Free Flight permet de s'envoler vers plus de 24 000 destinations à travers le globe, que l'on décolle de son aéroport local ou de lieux exotiques, avec la possibilité de régler l'heure, la saison et la météo. La version Steam Edition, fonctionnellement similaire à l'édition Gold en coffret, a mis à jour le multijoueur et la prise en charge de Windows 8.1, offrant un monde connecté où l'on peut endosser le rôle de pilote, copilote ou contrôleur aérien, et proposant des modes de course comme les Red Bull Air Race ou les championnats de Reno. Plus de 80 missions, allant du sauvetage au transport, sont disponibles avec trois niveaux de difficulté, et des aéronefs tels que l'Airbus A321, le Boeing 747-400 ou le P-51D Mustang sont inclus, certains modules tiers de l'édition Gold n'étant pas garantis compatibles avec la version Steam.
L'accueil critique a mis en avant la qualité de l'expérience, Times Online saluant un « awesome flight » et AceGamez notant que les effets d'éclairage nocturne ont été si améliorés qu'ils ne ressemblent plus du tout à FS2004. Du côté des joueurs, les avis sont partagés : si certains sur Steam louent un « BON PROGRAMME QUI DEMANDE PEU DE RESSOURCES ORDINATEUR » et rapportent y jouer depuis plus de dix ans, d'autres sur Metacritic déplorent un jeu « buggy, unplayable mess ». L'ensemble affiche une note agrégée de 78,12 pour un prix de 24,99 euros sous protection Microsoft Product Activation.

« This game is ****. It is a buggy, unplayable mess that cost $27. I was basically scammed to buy this. It is so old and nobody even touches it, that and the graphics look like Bubsy 3d. 0/10. Do not buy this game. If you wanna learn how to fly, playing Pilot Training Flight Simulator on **** would be more fun and cheaper than this ever will be. »
« O velho guerreiro, ainda jogo ele, há mais de 10 anos, tenho ele instalado deste 2010, ele sozinho num, Windows somente para ele, mais de 5 TB de dados de cenários, e nunca precisei reinstalar. Tenho mais de 1400 entradas de cenários incluídos nestes mais de 10 anos, não foi fácil deixar assim. Está perfeito amo ele. »
