The best PC games of 2018: Into the Breach

Every level of Into the Breach is like one of those ball bearing mazes that come in Christmas crackers. They're a puzzle in miniature that, with enough patience and planning, can be solved in a single faultless run. Success in both comes paired with a sense of relief, as each move towards the end carries the risk of losing all the progress made so far. This comparison falls apart, however, in that I tend to snap the toy in two before Boxing Day, yet after months with Into the Breach I'm still in love with its challenge. I spend a lot of my time playing Into the Breach staring at the screen, trying to solve the mental Rubik's cube that is each turn. The enemy aliens move into position, every one of them trying to attack either my time-travelling mech rpilots, or the densely populated city blocks I'm trying to defend. Then it's up to me to find a way to kill, block, or move the enemy before their attacks land. For instance, a well-placed mortar shell can shove a bug one square to the east, meaning their claws will swipe at thin air instead of a skyscraper. What I've come to appreciate most over the year I've now spent with Into the Breach is its spirit of reinvention. Yes, each time you play you're diving into a new procedurally generated campaign, but I'm really referring to the squad system. Read the rest of the story... Steam's most essential roguelike strategy game is half price right now

If you enjoy turn-based strategy games and roguelikes, and you haven't played Into the Breach yet, I implore you to put down every other game you're playing (yes, even Balatro) and do so. Built by Subset Games, the masterminds behind the also-excellent FTL: Faster Than Light, Into the Breach is a truly masterful piece of design: part puzzle, part tactics, part mechs, and 100% pure satisfaction, it ranks among greats like Slay the Spire, Dead Cells, and Hades as one of the best in the business. Boasting a 94% Steam rating, and at a huge discount right now thanks to a Steam sale, don't just take my word for it - give it a try. Read the rest of the story... Avis des critiques et joueurs

Critiques de la Presse (Metacritic)

Digital Trends 100/100

« We dare say that Subset has outdone itself, surpassing FTL with a game that is even more focused, interesting, and repeatable. »

Gameplanet 100/100

« With Into the Breach Subset Games rewrites the tactical gameplay rulebook by removing most of its pages. In doing so, it has created a superlative strategy game. »

Guardian 100/100

« Perhaps the biggest surprise, at least for anyone who played its brilliant but cruel predecessor FTL: Faster Than Light, is how overwhelmingly fair Into the Breach is. There are no random events that unexpectedly handicap you. Instead, every situation is winnable from the outset (though poor first-turn decisions will change that), and you are shown the consequences of any action before you commit to it. »

Trusted Reviews 100/100

« Subset games has achieved a mastery of the microdrama, and as such, Into The Breach is about as essential as indie games get. »

Strategy Gamer 100/100

« More puzzle than strategy, Into the Breach comes with enough bells, whistles and giant robots to keep the formula fresh over repeat plays. »

LEVEL (Czech Republic) 100/100

« Turn-based strategy game with exceptionally original game mechanics, well-designed maps, and great core gameplay that guarantees a long entertainment. [Issue#284] »

Ragequit.gr 98/100

« Into the Breach is a marvel of "board-game" design, its components organically tied together to form a game with immense tactical depth. Everything seems to have fallen into place. One could claim that Into the Breach is a complex, evolved form of chess. We would not have it any other way. »

Meristation 95/100

« Incredibly complex, deep and challenging, Into the Breach is a title that begs to be played and experienced by any individual even slightly into turn-based strategy. An instant classic that won't be easily forgotten. »

Avis des Joueurs (Metacritic)

Alguienmagnetic 10/10

« En su momento juegazo de los pocos roguelike que me gusta. Cuando lo jugué no había tantos como ahora que son casi una epidemia. »

TekLordsWilliam 10/10

« Great game! Loved my time with. There's a deep addiction that prevents me from stop playing. Loved this! »

smogmonsteris 10/10

« My favorite XCOM like! Very addicting, with a really cool meta progression system. Loved it »

junglewolf 9/10

« It surprised me in a very positive way, and it’s yet another proof that flashy graphics aren’t everything in a video game. It’s a strategy game that feels a lot like chess, but with additional mechanics that, while not complex, make matches deeper and more interesting. On top of that, it follows a roguelike premise: if you lose, you have to restart the campaign from the beginning (but don’t worry—you can finish it in just a few **** each match, you control three types of mechs, each with a specific purpose on the battlefield (the board). Every mech has a pilot who gains experience and abilities as the team succeeds in battles. If a mech is destroyed, you lose the pilot, and only the basic robot—without abilities—can be used in future runs (though you can obtain others). The focus of each match isn’t eliminating enemies, but protecting buildings, which effectively represent the player’s “health.” Even though it sounds simple, you really only get the hang of it after losing quite a **** forced campaign restart when you lose is actually a great idea, as it allows you to save at least one mech pilot and go back in time to try everything again. The game features a well-designed progressive difficulty system that gives you time to learn, but also includes randomness that can be frustrating at times. Enemy variety is interesting and genuinely impacts gameplay (damn spiders). There’s a lot of replay value, since you can finish the campaign at different points (the later you go, the harder it gets), and you can also unlock other mech squads with abilities very different from the starting ones.I really liked the fact that matches are short and that you can save at any time (not everyone has hours to spend gaming). Into the Breach is excellent—and it will hook you (in a good way). »

whitesun11 7/10

« Yet another overhyped game. It is in essence puzzle game with some strategy elements. But it will definetly entertain you for several hours or so. And yes, it is very quality game. »

jackleh 4/10

« Plays less like a tactical game and more like a puzzle game. While such trait is not inherently bad, it creates a repetitive and unfair gameplay loop due to the randomness of the combat puzzles. »

AlexMF6 8/10

« I needed a game to fill my weekend while I waited for Metaphor to arrive, and Into the Breach did the trick perfectly. I got completely hooked and put 11 hours into it over two days. It's one of the best indie strategy games I've ever played. »

jonnythecat 10/10

« In my view this is basically a perfect game. The concept is largely connected to chess (8x8 grid, pieces that have their movement patterns) with many key differences (environmental objects, weapons, each "player" moves all their pieces on their turn). In that regard it maintains the same beautiful minimalism of chess but upgrades its richness in numerous ways. It's tied together by the variety of squads and how they really synergize with each other, on top of the additional synergies you get with in-game pickups. »
