Sorti le 1er août 1998, Crash Bandicoot est un jeu de plateforme développé et publié par Tiger Electronics, avec la participation de Universal Interactive pour la publication en Amérique du Nord. Il a été conçu pour la console portable dédiée Handheld Electronic LCD. Ce titre constitue le troisième opus de la série Crash Bandicoot, le premier à paraître sur un support portable et le premier à proposer une option multijoueur. Malgré le partage de son nom avec le jeu de 1996, il n'en est ni une adaptation ni un portage et offre un scénario propre ainsi que des niveaux inédits.
Sur Metacritic, certains joueurs ont exprimé leur avis sur ce volet. L'un a salué la conception des niveaux en évoquant le savoir-faire de Naughty Dog, tout en concédant que le jeu est court et peu difficile. Un autre a qualifié l'expérience de très amusante et divertissante, mais a regretté que la fin devienne un peu ennuyeuse, ce qui l'a conduit à attribuer une note de 7.

« Naughty Dog was always the top dog regarding level design, and this game shows it where it all starterd, sure it may be short and not that challenging, but still it is creative and very fun to play after you get used to the controls. »
