Band Hero, spin-off de la série Guitar Hero éditée par Activision, est sorti le 3 novembre 2009 sur PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii et Nintendo DS. Développé par Budcat Creations, Neversoft Entertainment et Vicarious Visions, ce jeu de musique repose sur une structure similaire à Guitar Hero 5, avec un mode bande complet incluant guitare solo, basse, batterie et chant, ainsi que des fonctions de changement d'instrument et de difficulté en cours de chanson. Les versions consoles utilisent des contrôleurs en forme d'instruments, tandis que la version DS se joue avec le Guitar Grip ou un Drum Skin fourni. Le jeu présente les avatars virtuels de Taylor Swift, Adam Levine et du groupe No Doubt, et propose 65 chansons.
Le titre a reçu des critiques mitigées. La presse a salué le fait que Neversoft et Activision s'appuient sur la conception de Guitar Hero 5 pour offrir une version adaptée aux hits pop rock, tout en relevant une certaine fatigue des joueurs face à la multiplication de jeux musicaux similaires. Certains joueurs indiquent avoir apprécié les morceaux proposés, mêlant nouveautés et classiques, tandis que d'autres regrettent un achat jugé inutile. Un jour après la sortie, le groupe No Doubt a assigné Activision en justice pour l'usage de leurs avatars, invoquant un problème similaire à celui de l'avatar de Kurt Cobain dans Guitar Hero 5. La note agrégée du jeu s'élève à 73,05, avec un temps de parcours principal estimé à six heures et une complétion à environ vingt heures et demie.

« I actually enjoyed Band Hero, the music isn't for everyone but there is a few great tracks on there. I like the fact that neversoft mixed New music with the old ( which they always do) so that kids can discover new music. If it wasn't for Band Hero, I wouldn't be into The Kooks, The Airbourne Toxic Event, Everclear or OK Go. The layout is exactly like Guitar Hero 5 except the background is Pink and Purple and not Brick and Blue but don't be turned off about that. It also keeps the same game modes and features 5 had like Party Play and the different combinations of instruments. Best part about the game is that you can export most of the tracklist to GH 5 and import songs from other GH Games into Band Hero as well. The game is really cheap now so search the bargin bins for it and start rocking out providing you have the instruments for it :P »
« I just picked this game up at EB Games for $9.99 and it was the biggest waste of money I have ever spent. I quite literally made this account a few moments ago just to display my disgust for this absolutely atrocious game. »
« It's not a bad game to play. Just a bad game to listen to, at least for me. It's definitely an alternative if you've got a younger crowd to attend to that doesn't need to hear inappropriate lyrics. It may be a little tedious to be surrounded by mainly one genre, but it still plays pretty well. »
