Développé par le studio indépendant Spearhead Games et édité par 505 Games, Tiny Brains est sorti le 15 novembre 2013 sur PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 et PC via Steam, où il utilise le DRM de la plateforme et tourne sous Unreal Engine 3. Proposé au tarif de 8,19 euros, ce titre mêle aventure, plateforme et réflexion dans une expérience résolument coopérative.
Le jeu place le joueur dans la peau de l'un de quatre animaux de laboratoire dotés de super-pouvoirs — Création, Force, Vortex et Téléportation — qui tentent de s'échapper des expériences d'un savant fou. La progression repose sur la combinaison de ces pouvoirs physiques pour résoudre des énigmes au sein de labyrinthes truffés de pièges, chaque situation pouvant être surmontée de multiples façons selon la coordination du groupe. L'univers visuel adopte un ton fantaisiste et coloré, peuplé de personnages mutants mais attachants, évoluant dans des décors bricolés à base de bâtonnets glacés, de ruban adhésif et de machines de Rube Goldberg.
La structure propose une campagne principale estimée à deux heures, extensible à quatre heures pour une complétion totale, complétée par des défis chronométrés et des niveaux infinis. Le titre vise un public large grâce à des commandes simples accessibles aux novices, tout en intégrant des classements compétitifs et une jouabilité rythmée exigeant une communication efficace pour satisfaire les joueurs plus expérimentés.
Côté réception, le jeu obtient une note moyenne de 63 sur Metacritic et un agrégat de 64,95. La presse a salué l'accessibilité couplée à une certaine profondeur, GameFront la jugeant même comme une excellente justification pour acquérir des manettes supplémentaires sur PlayStation 4, tandis que Destructoid a regretté une campagne principale trop courte mais loué le plaisir en multijoueur et la variété des défis. Du côté des joueurs, les avis divergent : certains estiment l'expérience sympathique pour quelques heures en groupe mais déconseillent l'achat au prix fort en solo, d'autres critiquent une gestion des contrôles hasardeuse avec des configurations de manettes mixtes, et une minorité y voit une imitation bas de gamme d'Angry Birds.

« Played local coop with my friend. only had 1 dualshock4, but he brought his vita and it works well as a second controller. We later set the game to public online, so 1 other player joined our game. We finished the story mode, which was relatively short, but then we played a bunch of challenges. The story was a lot of fun, but the challenges I think is where the real game is at. Tons of fun, and soo addictive! Overall a great addition to my PS4 games collection. I can easily see myself coming back regularly to this game, solo or coop. »
« When looking at puzzle games it's hard not to compare things to Portal (which in my opinion is the BEST puzzle game in recent years), so while this isn't on par with Portal, it is a solid puzzle game that is made even better when playing on a couch with a friend. The graphics of this games don't really show off everything the PS4 can do, but it is still a pretty game that looks great on your HDTV. There are occasions where I feel like I was failing a challenge due to poor controls, but most of the time it was due to not utilizing the "Tiny Brains" powers appropriatly. Also the game adjusts the level design to accomodate if you are playing one player or multiplayer which is nice. On a whole I'd say try the demo, and if it interests you $15.99 on with a Playstation plus account isn't a bad price for a few hours of co-op fun. »
« Awesome COOP game! Gameplay is easy to pick up and perfect for a game night. Plus, since the main campaign is around 3 hours long, it's even possible to complete it with friends in a single sitting if ou want to keep playing, the other modes are still pretty fun tough. If you have a Vita, it's also pretty useful to be able to use it as an extra controller, since it's hard to gather 4 controllers for couch cooop.. SONY, make a Tiny Brains bundle NOW! »
