The Sims 2, développé par Maxis et édité par Aspyr Media et Electronic Arts, est sorti le 14 septembre 2004 sur PC (Microsoft Windows) et Mac. Ce titre de simulation, de stratégie et de rôle utilise le moteur The Sims 2 Engine et un système de protection SafeDisc|3, pour un prix de 29,99 euros. Le jeu permet de contrôler des Sims sur l'ensemble de leur existence, de leurs premiers pas à la vieillesse, avec un nouveau moteur 3D. Les Sims possèdent désormais des aspirations, des envies et des peurs, ainsi que des traits transmis par ADN à travers les générations. La narration débute au niveau du quartier, où l'on peut créer un lotissement ou utiliser l'un des trois quartiers préexistants, et les foyers prédéfinis parodient les intrigues de feuilletons télévisés. La version Les Sims 2 Collection héritage inclut le jeu de base et de nombreux packs et kits. La presse a salué l'accessibilité du titre, comme GamePro qui a écrit qu'il s'agit d'un jeu que tout le monde devrait essayer, tandis que certains joueurs sur Steam regrettent des fermetures intempestives malgré la présence de tous les DLC. Le jeu affiche un score Metacritic de 90 et une note agrégée de 85,06.

« This is a review of the re-release of The Sims 2 Legacy Collection. The UI is a blurry mess, countless new and old bugs. Pink stripes line the edges of UI thumbnails (hello, The Sims 3 64-bit on Mac), crashes are frequent, sound quality is poor, content has been cut, pets disappear, and beaches are broken - the list goes on. The game is simply unplayable. They managed to ruin something that wasn’t even broken, something that could have been fixed with just one tool - Graphic Rules Maker - and a simple mod that FIX shadows. That’s it! Yet, somehow, they still made sure to put their names above Will Wright in the credits. This is the end. »
