Ce jeu de puzzle requiert des compétences réelles, de la vivacité d'esprit et une pensée tactique pour être maîtrisé.
Les joueurs sont amenés à orchestrer des réactions en chaîne nettoyant l'écran et à utiliser des power-ups surchargés. Quatre modes variés sont proposés, intitulés Minute Match, Wave Mode, Fish Fight et Puzzle, et s'appuient sur des systèmes de gameplay intelligents pour offrir une réelle profondeur.
Du côté des retours, la presse a partagé des avis nuancés. Nintendo Insider a décrit Swap This! comme un puzzle-game adorable et rapide à prendre en main, bien qu'il ne retienne pas longtemps l'attention, à l'image des jeux sur smartphone. Cubed3 a pour sa part regretté que le titre soit, comme la plupart des jeux de correspondance, exactement cela : un simple jeu de matching, joli mais classique. Certains joueurs ont également fait part de difficultés, comme ce joueur sur Metacritic qui a indiqué que le jeu ne fonctionnait pas et que ses messages à Two Tribes et à Nintendo étaient restés sans réponse, malgré une réinstallation.

« Swap This! is an adorably cute puzzler that’s quick to pick up but like all smartphone games won’t hold your attention for too long. At less than the price of a cup of coffee though you’ll have a hard time finding a game on the Switch that’s as charming or enjoyable for less. »

« Sorry but game is not working i wrote to Two Tribes no answere and i wrote to Nintendo all what they told me install it again which i did still nothing. In Handheld modus i only come to the Menu Title and can't click on anything in TV Modus it try some calibrating stuff which is not even working. Every other game on the Switch i never had any Problems with. »
