Nintendo Life 100/100

« Put in as simple a manner as possible, this is likely to be the last 2D Mario game you’ll need. It’s Super Mario Maker but with more of everything that made the original so phenomenal. Enemies, themes, game styles, gizmos, powerups, the Story Mode having an actual story, multiplayer, the list of additional gubbins is truly massive when you take a step back. There are a few small niggles here and there, but they're overwhelmingly dwarfed by the sheer joy and unbridled freedom that exceeds the original in spades. Realistically this game poses the question as to whether this is the future for 2D Mario as a whole. For any fan of Mario who owns a Switch – heck, for any Switch owner full stop – buying this game is an absolute necessity. »

We Got This Covered 100/100

« It may have taken a few years, but the king of level creation is back and better than ever. Super Mario Maker 2 might not reinvent the wheel, but it refines the entire level creation process to near perfection. An absolute must-buy for anyone with a Nintendo Switch. »

VGC 100/100

« Mario Maker 2 offers a fun and more dynamic package than the original game. A surprising and enjoyable Mario classic in the making, with plenty to offer creators and non-creators alike. »

Daily Star 100/100

« With even more tools and features than before, Super Mario Maker 2 is a fantastic level-making package deserving of its number. Even players without a creative itch will have a blast with story mode, and being on a console with an install base already much larger than its predecessor ever had, there’ll no doubt be countless more exciting and inventive levels to come. »

Nintendojo 100/100

« Overall, this is a truly astounding accomplishment by Nintendo. The suite of tools is easy to learn and use, there are a ton of elements and features to employ, and with the ability to play what is practically an endless stream of new stages, this is a triumph of Nintendo’s creative spirit. A must for Switch owners— don’t sleep on this one! »

Games.cz 100/100

« Another masterpiece by Nintendo. Super Mario Maker 2 is a delight for every creative soul out there - and yet also cares about players with no interest in designing their own levels. There are dozens of hours of pure fun for both of those groups. »

Nintendo Force Magazine 100/100

« A transcendent experience that will only continue to improve over time. [Issue #41 – September 2019, p. 68] »

Stevivor 95/100

« If you’ve played Super Mario Maker, you already know this Switch sequel is a must-buy. If you’re a Switch owner, Super Mario Maker 2 needs to be part of your collection. Easy as that. »

« I love the game but sometimes it's boring when you don't have the online »

DaBomb242 8/10

« I enjoyed playing this game. It has a good level editor, but it's way better in handheld mode. There are a lot of power-ups and blocks to use, offering great variety. Online mode is my personal favorite, but certain modes (like Co-op and Competitive) can be very laggy. There is a search area to look for levels, but it lacks a place to look up the name, which doesn't make sense to me. The story mode is OK, but once you beat it there isn't much to do afterward, which I found mildly disappointing. Overall, I recommend this game because it offers a unique experience you can't really find anywhere else. »

« I don't have much to say about this game. The story mode is very good and contains levels that are better than those found in some 2D Mario games. However, if you don't have Nintendo Switch Online, you'll only be able to play this mode and none of the ones I'm about to **** level editor is well-equipped, but you still need to be at least somewhat creative to make good use of it. The tutorial videos are useful, although not particularly engaging. The World Maker feature is an incredible addition. Endless Challenge is a good idea on paper, but it's undermined by an issue that I'll talk about shortly. There are, however, some major problems. The online mode suffers from a lot of lag, making it practically unplayable. The game is entirely driven by its community, which means that 99% of the levels you'll play are average at best, if not outright bad. Even within the "Popular" category, I feel that levels are no longer as interesting as they used to be. You keep running into the same types of levels over and over again, and plagiarism is **** in any given week and you'll always find the same things: refresh levels (which I find unbearable), speedrun levels (almost always in the Super Mario World style with generic Unity-like background music), music levels (especially Kirby-themed ones), and mini-games (tennis, spot the difference, and so on). Even the most popular levels feel repetitive and uninspired at this **** game itself is very good, but the levels created by the community are far less imaginative than they once were, and it's very easy to grow bored of them.
