« Puyo Puyo tetris 2 is an enjoyable yet simple puzzler that combines two classic titles into one fantastic game that is sure to leave a smile on your face. »

Nintenderos 90/100

« Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 is based on the original title to make a bigger and better game, achieving a perfect experience with puzzles, new modes, new characters and the same playable perfection that Puyo Puyo and Tetris offer. »

NintendoWorldReport 90/100

« Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 doesn’t reinvent the wheel - that was already done in the first game in this series. What this sequel does is keep what worked so well about the original while adding to or refining everything else. Clear, expansive tutorials make it more approachable, a variety of online Puzzle Leagues make the depth of online play stronger, and the new Skill Battle mode adds a smart twist to the gameplay. This is a vibrant and enjoyable puzzle game that is packed with content and variety. »

« SEGA snookered itself a little with the original Puyo Puyo Tetris. The reality is that that game was so perfectly complete that whatever came next was going to feel slightly diminished because its core strength - the ingenious ability to combine two very different puzzlers in a cohesive manner - was no longer new and exciting. Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 does everything that original game did. It's every bit as charming, entertaining, and downright fun. The problem is, it doesn't have the same impact now, and if there is going to be a Puyo Puyo Tetris 3, the development team is going to need to come up with a new trick, else the prestige of the oddball crossover is going to start to fade. »

« Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 is a generous, complete game with timeless and relentless game mechanics. Because of this, it is undoubtedly a must-have for anyone who enjoys competitive puzzle play. »

« In a year full of massive, story-driven and crunch-produced experiences, it’s refreshing to spend time with something so straightforward. Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 does something simple but does it right, and when I’m dropping blocks or matching puyos, I just can’t seem to put my Switch down. »

Nintendo Force Magazine 85/100

« An improvement over the original in every way. This is a can't-miss addition to any puzzle fan's library! [Issue #50 – January/February 2021, p. 73] »

« This game is pure cringe. The voice acting is godawful. The English in particular is offensively bad, it sounds like a sad fan dub. The story itself is absolutely generic garbage and reads like some webtoon you'd see posted on tumblr, complete with the unfunniest millennial snark dialogue. The in-game quips from each character are torturously repetitive, and they make the most annoying sounds imaginable. most of the game is just completing a line of tetris or puyo and then listening to "GUGUGUGUGUUUUU" each time. The gameplay itself is hard to mess up. (it's Tetris and puyo after all), but somehow they screw it up anyhow. the local multiplayer is cartoonishly unbalanced. whoever is ahead for the entire match gets flipped in the last 10 seconds by an ability that steals their score and adds it to the player with the lowest score. and forget beating a puyo player as a tetris player lol. This game looks cutesy until you see how low effort it is and how bad all of its components make the whole. »

« This games ability to favor Puyo Puyo is unreal. It is stupidly difficult to even win against someone when playing Tetris and the other is playing Puyo Puyo. You either play Puyo v Puyo or Tetris v Tetris. The games “adventure” mode, or “pain” mode as I like to call it ramps up in difficulty due to this unfair balancing. New players will be frustrated by this train wreck SEGA made. The only saving grace this game has is its graphics and user interface, which aren’t half bad. »

« A great sequel to the first puyo puyo game, with a pretty tough story mode.. »

« I have about 60 hours in PPT2 and have completed every mission in the campaign including the optional ones. Gameplay: The main reason to play this is the online ranked versus modes. Although it's still better to play competitive Tetris in Tetris the Grand Master 3 for World rule and Tetris NES for Classic rule; there are some advantages to PPT2 online. It includes a new Swap mode that is pretty well balanced if you're good at both Tetris and Puyo and still has some online tournaments if you dig deep enough into the community. It also allows for 4 player Tetris and Puyo battles, although if you don't pick Swap mode you have to remake the room every time you want to switch modes with your friends. There are other modes like, "Party" (which is just straight up the versus mode from Cardcaptor Sakura Tetris) that includes items and, "Big Bang" which is mostly just good for practice and nothing else since its really repetitive. If you don't want to buy standalone Tetris games and Puyo games like Tetris Effect or Puyo Puyo Champions then this is a good game to let you play both. One BIG problem I have with the gameplay (other than having to remake lobbies any time you want to add a new player or change modes) is that the layout for your next pieces/puyos are in the typically standard spot for 2 player (Good) BUT in 3 or 4 player they move the next pieces UI around so it's on the opposite part of the screen which all of my tetris/puyo friends agree make it really hard to play (Bad). Story: This is the worst part of the game, do yourself a favor and skip every cutscene if you play this game ( I didn't skip them and I regret it). Without spoiling anything, the story is kindergarten dialogue, all the characters are very one-track. They all have 1 quirk about them they constantly remind you of (even the characters that were previously more fleshed out in other games) and that consists of every cutscene. One character is obsessed with fun, one character is obsessed with love, one character gets really scared but then becomes really confident on and off, you get the idea. The campaign is also a mostly re-hashed story from the previous PPT game, none of the characters seem to remember anything from PPT1 and just kind of do everything again. Everything feels really forced like, "We're not sure what to do, clear our minds with tetris/puyo!", "Our enemy is angry, fight him with tetris/puyo!", "Our ally is feeling down, fix them with tetris/puyo!" it just gets really irritating. You will also 100% the game before you beat it if you do well, because the mission rankings seem to let you go waaay past 100%, kind of defeats the point of a progress counter for me. The story also forced you to play modes you may not want to play with no alternative. Sound: Good Netcode: Good, I'm in Colorado and I can play people from New Zealand over wifi with no problem. Music: Tetris music good, puyo music unfitting, also contains Escape from the City from Sonic Adventure 2 for some reason. Art: Good, pretty much what'd you expect. Summary: This should have been a simple game to make well but the outdated online lobbies, sub-optimal UI, and pre-school children story writing really hold it back. The whole game feels a bit rushed, some transitions during lobbies and gameplay are fast and some are slow. It would be nice to have a Puyo Puyo Tetris Deluxe that is actually polished. P.S. There is a shop where you can unlock alternate tetris/puyo layouts but there are only 6, they never added more after release, and they all look like crap except the classic layout. »

« Now THIS is a game. GROUNDBREAKING graphics. INTESE gameplay. EMOTIONAL storyline. THIS is the pinnacle of video games. Can you REAAAAAALLY call **** if you haven't played this MASTERPIECE? This game has refined the Tetris gameplay into its final form if you will. The puyo puyo parts are mid, but because Tetris is such a spectacular, earth ****, genre defining experience that this game is automatically a 10/10. Must play. »

« So, I came into this game as a solid Tetris 99 player and a newbie at Puyo Puyo. I got half way through story mode, at which point Tetris had been very easy and Puyo Puyo had been a good challenge but was now becoming difficult. This was somewhat expected, although I thought I might get a little farther before Puyo Puyo became so difficult. I enjoyed this first half of the game and decided to try out another of the various game modes I saw in the menu. So, I switched to online play for Tetris only, something I was looking forward to. Online play for Tetris does not run smooth. I may go back to finish story mode or play other game modes but I can’t go higher than this with the disappointing online Tetris. »
