Le titre a reçu une note agrégée de 57,00. L’accueil critique s’est révélé contrasté, la presse exprimant des avis divergents. Le site AceGamez a ainsi salué son accessibilité, jugeant que « Paint by DS is absolutely accessible regardless of age or gender and comes highly recommended - if it doesn't blow the casual gaming market open even further t… ». À l’opposé, le magazine Games Master UK s’est montré perplexe, décrivant le produit comme « Another non-game for the DS that leaves us slightly puzzled » dans son numéro de mars 2008.
