Othello

« As it stands, it’s an OK representation of Othello in video game form, but it doesn’t really do anything else than give you basic video game Othello. It’s a little bland and by the numbers in that regard, which is disappointing considering it has been forever since I’ve played Othello in any format. Still, if you’ve got five bucks to spend, and you’re looking for something to play on the Switch, it’s not a bad way to go. You can pick up and play a round or two pretty quickly, making it a solid portable experience if you’re on the go. I wouldn’t highly recommend it by any means, but if you’re in the mood for some classic board game experiences, Othello can scratch that itch. »

« Othello is a release that can certainly grab and hold the attention of those that like the core game or want a bit of relaxed multiplayer; you can easily pass a Joy-Con or even exclusively use the touchscreen. However, while it's interesting to see Arc System Works diversify itself, the title would be much more at home if it was included with a compilation of other tabletop games. It's a functional and solid release, though it's down to individuals whether the convenience is worth the price, or whether this is one of those 'when on discount' downloads. »

« Overall, Othello is a difficult game to appraise. It's certainly not going thrill or blow anyone away. However, it does have hidden depths and is very suitable for play sessions in a variety of situations. There's really nothing it does wrong, although, to be frank, considering it's essentially the type of game typically seen on tablets and mobiles, it does perhaps lack some aesthetic padding and other features. Particularly glaring is the lack of online play, which certainly would have helped longevity considerably. However, while it misses a few features, it's still a nice, affordable, and simple board game to have available on Nintendo Switch. It could just do with more additions, whether aesthetic or simple touches, for the sake of variety and contrast. Considering this is not the only way to play the game, that lacklustre aspect of the game is the most disappointing. Hopefully it doesn't set a precedent for similar simple titles. »

« Othello is a classic board game that holds up well after all these years. However, this version is so bare-bones that you may as well pick up an 8-bit iteration as it'll probably be more fully-featured. »

« Othello for Nintendo Switch is a digital version of the long-running board game also known as Reversi and is entirely faithful to the original, in the sense that it is simple to learn and perfectly enjoyable for short gaming sessions. While technically competent and without any execution problems, it lacks a sorely needed online multiplayer component, without which its selling price seems way too high for a game that can be easily and legally found for free elsewhere. »

« The idea of porting boardgames (for a reasonable price) to the Switch is actually a really good one. Othello on Switch is simultaneously cheaper and more portable than its physical counterpart. Supporting both touch screen and single-joycon play makes this game more than worth the 5 dollar price tag. But it would be cool to see some more creative muscles like the upcoming monopoly game seems to have. Overall a recommended, above average game. »
