Description (IGDB)

Catan is a handheld implementation of a board game Settlers of Catan. There is a flat board with the game world divided on a number of hexagons. The goal of the game is to reach ten Victory points that are earned by having settlements, point cards and some other conditions, however there could be other goals in this version. Every turn players can either build roads, settlements and cities or expand onto over territories, which also produce different resources needed for construction. Resources could be either purchased for Settlement cards or traded with other players. The N-Gage version, besides the traditional board game rules, also features a multi-stage tournament and a quest-mode with a number of different objectives, like building the longest road or having the largest army, by the end of the game, or reaching ten points under a certain amount of turns. Most of the in-game actions are decided by the roll of dice and it is done automatically. There are ten different computer characters who has their own portraits and things they say during the game, if you are playing alone. Of course, there's a multiplayer option for up to four players as well. Also there's a short tutorial to grasp the strategy basics.

Console Gameworld 94/100

« Captures the essence of the board game beautifully (quick to learn but hard to master). »

Game Almighty 92/100

« I'm helplessly addicted...Catan is a god send of a game, filling a void in Xbox Live's offerings that will hopefully lead to more strategic board games in the near future. »

GameShark 91/100

« Throw in some nice bells and whistles such as calling up die roll results charts and reference screens and Catan really gives you everything you need to play. »

TeamXbox 86/100

« One of the best reasons for buying a game like Catan on XBLA—which comes with a cost of 800 Microsoft Points or about $10—is that you don’t have to know the rules and procedures that well. »

Game Over Online 85/100

« If you’re a fan of the board game or strategy games in general, there’s no better way to spend your Microsoft Points. »

Worth Playing 85/100

« Catan is a well developed version of "Settlers of Catan," and truthfully, I think Big Huge Games was just the right company to do it. It played very smoothly and is without a doubt is the next best thing — if not the best thing — to playing the original version of "Settlers of Catan." »

Digital Entertainment News 85/100

« It’s not perfect, but overall this is possibly the most delightful surprise on XBLA since Geometry Wars came out of nowhere to be the platform’s killer app. »

Talk Xbox 84/100

« A superb addition to anyone’s library. Its accessibility and user-friendliness will allow people of all skill types to have a blast. Even if this wasn’t your type of game in the past, Catan may just make you a believer. »

« This was my first and only experience with Settlers of Catan. Penny Arcade used to have a podcast. I dunno if they still do, but they talked about this game, it intrigued me so I gave it a chance. And I loved it. The graphics really were nice, maybe even going a little overboard, but there is a low graphics mode too if you want a simpler display. The AI is fairly good and satisfying to beat. It tends to not want to trade with you no matter how good of a deal it would be for them when you are in the lead, but on the flip side you can exploit the AI by seeing how much they will give you for any one card by asking for more until they refuse to trade, Personally since the AI tends to work together against you I usually would employ a port strategy preferably around a single resources. I stack that resource as much as possible then link to the corresponding port then I can trade 2 of that resources for any resource I want. My xbox360 was stolen a few years ago, and this game was never made backwards compatible on xbox one. I don't think you can buy it anymore either. I wonder if you can play it on series x? »

« The AI plays three players against you! The dice are set to give AI all the cards they need, I have tried this game for the past two days keeping record and it is clear whichever tiles the human needs are always the least rolled on the dice. DO NOT BUY THIS GAME! get the board game version and play it with your friends, this version is a waste of money! »

« Uff, difficult, this game is good, but some parts of the game are boring, Catan is a good game, with some mistakes, is addictive, but is so strange. Good game, not excellent. »
