Le titre propose de prendre le contrôle de l'une des 199 nations ayant participé aux qualifications et de mener son équipe jusqu'à une reproduction virtuelle de la finale de la Coupe du monde, dans les dix stades officiels sud-africains ainsi que dans des enceintes des zones de qualification. Les joueurs peuvent affronter l'ordinateur ou d'autres participants via PlayStation Network ou Xbox Live, et le jeu intègre des améliorations par rapport à FIFA 10, notamment une fatigue accrue en altitude favorable aux équipes locales, ainsi que la possibilité de voir des joueurs se blesser hors des matchs internationaux. Avec une note moyenne agrégée de 77,55, l'accueil critique a été favorable : Eurogamer Italy a salué un excellent jeu capable de recréer l'atmosphère de la Coupe du monde et d'améliorer son prédécesseur, tandis que MondoXbox a estimé qu'il s'agissait d'une évolution intéressante de FIFA 10. « Man, this has to be "THE GAME", the World Cup songs, the atmosphere and immersive gameplay is present here, it's soo good that even now the game stays amazing! Also the game modes is a cool feature. Man it's bad to see FIFA or FC abandon the cool things to add more pay-to-win on their games. It's so bad seeing that amazing gaming Company abandon the fun to the money. Anyways this game is so cool, and need to be more recognized nowadays. 10/10, no questions. »

« 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa is an amazing game; it gets a 10, one up from what I gave FIFA 10 because of the advancements EA Sports has done on the game over FIFA 10 which includes; better lighting and shadows graphically which makes the stadiums that you travel to and the pitches themselves look spectacular. In addition, the crowds have been given so much more life and finally been animated to make the epic games even more so. Overall, this is a great game and any soccer fan should definitely play this! »

If FIFA11 is an improvement on this engine, FIFA's improvement from 2008 to 2011 will surpass that of the NHL franchise. Being able to every once in awhile take a go with Arjen Robben with his left foot from 30yds out and create something special is awesome. »
